![]() In the UK, standard landfill tax standard rates went up to £94.15 per tonne of material dumped1 in April 2020, an increase of 47% in eight years. Many governments want to impose steep rises in landfill tax and some, Germany’s federal government, for example, have banned the dumping of most forms of solid waste in landfill. Landfill sites fill up quickly these days and are becoming increasingly expensive. This adds value to the animal, creates jobs and wealth and enhances the lives of people everywhere. Turning material the meat industry cannot use into leather, (a protective, versatile, durable, breathable, circular and beautiful material), is, in the eyes of most of humanity, the best way of dealing with it. An inevitable consequence is the high volume of hides and skins that abattoirs have to find a home for. The meat and livestock sectors are important and lucrative parts of the global economy (because meat and milk mean money). Demand for meat and milk around the world remains high and is growing, especially in developing economies. ![]() ![]() The size of the world’s cattle, sheep and goat herds is greater than many consumers imagine. Letting this by-product go to waste would be a bad choice for financial, social and environmental reasons.
